Twenty One Pilots Blows the Roof Off the Iowa Events Center

On Friday night, October 25, the Iowa Events Center played host to Grammy Award-Winning group Twenty One Pilots. The musical duo from Columbus, Ohio, consists of Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun. Originally formed in 2009, they have enjoyed a huge amount of success including top-ten singles, a Grammy Award, Alternative Press Music Awards, Billboard Music Awards, numerous iHeartRadio Music Awards, MTV Video Music Awards, Kid’s Choice Awards, and a slew of others. After seeing them live in concert, it’s easy to see why they’ve been so successful. The duo was welcomed to the stage with thousands of cheering fans showing their appreciation. When the large black curtain that was shielding the stage dropped, Dun and Joseph stood on a platform high above the stage in front of a large video screen with an almost ominous smoke engulfing the set. Dun held a burning torch high above his head, and Joseph, complete with a black ski mask, gripped his guitar, as lasers flashed, and dramatic music played. Their 23-song set included tracks from all of their studio albums, and an awesome encore performance. Although the crowd seemed to love every second of their over two-hour set, the group’s mainstream hits, “Stressed Out”, “Heathens”, and “Ride” were definite standouts. Their unique Alternative Hip Hop / Indie Pop sound made me guess there wouldn’t be too many theatrics during this show, but I was highly mistaken. This concert had it all! There were two stages at opposite ends of the arena floor, which the duo went back and forth to, lasers, fire, fireworks, smoke machines, and a massive video screen. Joseph and Dun even had outfit changes throughout the show! From beginning to end, this concert was awesome, and I’m so thankful I had the opportunity to see Twenty One Pilots live and in person. This show was amazing, and probably one of the top five concerts I’ve seen.
