September 23, 2023 – The Astro – La Vista, NE
On Saturday night September 23, 2023, The Astro in La Vista, Nebraska, played host to The Goo Goo Dolls and Fitz and The Tantrums’ The Big Night Out Tour, and it was fantastic!
This was my first time visiting The Astro and only the second show ever at the new venue. After raining all day, I was hoping the skies would clear for the outdoor show, and the night turned out to be beautiful!
The evening kicked off with Fitz and The Tantrums, and their electrifying performance left the audience in awe, proving once again that this band knows how to put on a show that transcends expectations.
From the moment the lights dimmed and the stage came to life with a pulsating energy, it was evident that this concert would be special. The band kicked off the night with their hit song “Sway,” and the crowd instantly erupted into cheers. The infectious rhythm and charismatic stage presence of lead singer Michael Fitzpatrick had everyone on their feet and dancing along.
One of the standout elements of their set was the band’s impeccable musicianship. The tight-knit ensemble effortlessly blended elements of pop, soul, and rock, creating a unique and vibrant sound that resonated throughout the amphitheater. No matter the song, whether it was the soulful “Out of My League” or the anthemic “The Walker,” Fitz and The Tantrums delivered each with precision and passion.
Michael Fitzpatrick’s interactions with the crowd were warm and engaging, making everyone feel like they were part of something special.
The band’s stage setup and visuals complemented their performance perfectly. A dynamic light show and a backdrop of colorful visuals added another layer of excitement to the concert.
Fitz and the Tantrums delivered a set that will be remembered for a long time. Their infectious energy, exceptional musicianship, and genuine connection left everyone with smiles on their faces and melodies in their hearts. They ended their set with “HandClap,” and everyone in the audience clapped their hands and danced to the infectious sounds.
If you have the chance to see Fitz and The Tantrums, don’t miss it. It’s a party you won’t want to end. What a fantastic way to kick off the night!
After a brief intermission, it was time for The Goo Goo Dolls, and as the band took the stage, the crowd erupted!
Opening with their classic hit “Broadway,” they immediately had the crowd in the palm of their hand. It was evident from the start that this concert would be a celebration of their extensive discography.
Frontman John Rzeznik’s voice sounded as powerful and emotionally charged as ever. His raw and heartfelt delivery during songs like “Black Balloon” and “Sympathy” sent chills through the audience, reminding us why these songs have become anthems of love and longing for decades.
The band’s founding members, Rzeznik and bassist Robby Takac, demonstrated a chemistry that comes only from years of collaboration.
What set this concert apart was the balance between nostalgia and fresh energy. While The Goo Goo Dolls paid tribute to their roots with renditions of tracks from their early albums, they also showcased their latest material, proving that their songwriting remains as relevant and poignant as ever. Songs like “Yeah, I Like You” and “Run All Night” were met with the same enthusiasm as their timeless classics.
A particularly touching moment occurred when Rzeznik dedicated “Name” to longtime fans, acknowledging the deep connection they’ve shared throughout the years. This heartfelt gesture resonated with the crowd, fostering a sense of unity and nostalgia.
The encore was a euphoric crescendo, featuring an electrifying performance of “Tattered Edge/You Should Be Happy” followed by the iconic “Iris.” The entire amphitheater seemed to sing along, creating a magical moment that left an indelible mark on everyone in attendance.
The Big Night Out Tour with The Goo Goo Dolls was a testament to the band’s enduring legacy and musical prowess. They effortlessly bridged the gap between their classic hits and contemporary work, delivering a performance that left fans both old and new with a renewed appreciation for their music.
If you have the opportunity to see The Goo Goo Dolls live, don’t hesitate. It’s an experience that transcends time and leaves you with a profound sense of connection to their music and to each other! What a night!
