The 2023 Outlandia Music Festival

August 11-12, 2023 – Falconwood Park – Bellevue, NE

Attending the Outlandia Music Festival in Bellevue, Nebraska was an unforgettable experience that left me captivated by the harmonious blend of music, nature, and community. The festival, nestled within the picturesque landscapes of Bellevue, offered a unique and enchanting escape for music lovers of all kinds. Due to a prior commitment with another show, I wasn’t able to attend the first day of the festival, but day 2 was definitely worth it!

From the moment I arrived at the festival grounds, I was greeted by a warm and vibrant atmosphere. The organizers had meticulously set up the space, creating an inviting ambiance that made me feel instantly at home. The stage was strategically positioned allowing attendees to enjoy their favorite acts while surrounded by great food and merchandise options.

The lineup was a diverse tapestry of musical genres, catering to a wide range of tastes. From indie rock to electronic beats and folk melodies, the festival’s curation was a testament to the organizers’ commitment to providing a well-rounded musical experience. Each performance was delivered with passion and enthusiasm, creating an electric connection between the artists and the audience.

Friday’s lineup included performances from Minne Lussa, The Envy Corps, The Good Life, Gregory Alan Isakov, and Lord Huron.

I was disappointed I couldn’t attend the festival on Friday, but day 2’s lineup included some heavy hitters in the music industry that definitely delivered!

Criteria, Horsegirl, Cat Power, The Faint, Manchester Orchestra, Jimmy Eat World, and Modest Mouse all put on terrific performances that left festival goers with memories to cherish for a long time.

A huge highlight for me was witnessing The Faint, who I hadn’t had the chance to see in person in a few years.

The band’s popularity with the crowd was apparent, and in my opinion, they could have easily headlined the show. Their distinctive blend of haunting melodies and infectious rhythms instantly transported the audience to a realm where the lines between past and future were blurred. From the very first chord, it was evident that this was going to be a set to remember. Frontman Todd Fink’s charismatic presence was captivating, as he oscillated between crooning hypnotic verses and delivering high-energy bursts of impassioned vocals. The band’s signature use of vintage synthesizers and electronic elements created an immersive sonic landscape, taking the audience on a sonic journey that felt both nostalgic and cutting-edge. The Faint’s set was a mesmerizing journey through the past, present, and future of music. Their ability to seamlessly meld electronic elements with punk and new wave influences was nothing short of awe-inspiring. Simply fantastic!

Jimmy Eat World was also a bucket list band that I got to check off my list! From the very first chord, Jimmy Eat World demonstrated why they have become a staple in the alternative rock scene. With a seamless blend of raw energy and polished musicianship, the band dove into their setlist with unbridled passion. Lead vocalist Jim Adkins’ unmistakable voice resonated through the air, carrying a depth of emotion that could be felt by every member of the audience.

The band’s connection with their fans was evident from the start. They didn’t just perform their songs; they invited the audience into a shared experience. Hits like “Sweetness,” “Bleed American,” and “The Middle,” had the entire crowd singing along, their voices merging with Adkins’ in a harmonious chorus that echoed throughout Outlandia.

Jimmy Eat World’s ability to convey complex emotions through their music was truly a sight to behold. The tender moments, like Adkins’ rendition of “Hear You Me,” gave me goosebumps. The vulnerability in his voice and the hushed reverence of the crowd created a profound connection that transcended the boundaries between artist and audience. They were absolutely awesome!

Modest Mouse headlined day two of Outlandia with a memorable performance. True to their reputation, the group delivered a performance that was as enigmatic as it was captivating.

As the stage lights flickered to life, the unmistakable voice of lead vocalist and frontman Isaac Brock filled the air, immediately transporting the audience to a world of introspection and curiosity. Opening with, “The World at Large,” the crowd was instantly swept up in the band’s infectious energy. Modest Mouse’s performance was a testament to their ability to seamlessly transition between genres and moods. From the raucous punk-infused tracks that had the audience bouncing in unison to the melancholic ballads that prompted reflective silence, the band’s dynamic range was on full display. Brock’s presence was magnetic, his distinct vocal delivery adding an air of authenticity to every lyric. He moved across the stage with an almost chaotic energy, at times leaning into the crowd and at others pouring his heart out into the microphone. The band members, including Jeremiah Green on drums and Tom Peloso on various instruments, complemented Brock’s intensity with their own brand of musical prowess. I’m glad I finally got to hear “Float On” live! What a way to wrap up the festival!

I think what truly set Outlandia apart from similar festivals was its emphasis on community engagement and interactivity. Throughout the festival grounds, there were various art installations, food trucks, vendors, and activities that encouraged attendees to connect, create, and explore. The festival fostered an environment where strangers quickly became friends, united by their love for music and creativity.

The food and beverage options were diverse and catered to a range of dietary preferences, ensuring that no one went hungry or unsatisfied. Local food vendors served up delicious and fresh offerings, adding to the overall sensory experience of the festival. Javi’s Tacos, Hawk’s Pizza, Wookie Dogs, and J’s Smokehouse BBQ were just a few of the many food vendors in attendance, and First National Bank provided free water refill stations, which was definitely appreciated!

The Outlandia Music Festival provided an enchanting retreat where music, nature, and community converged in harmony. The event’s unique blend of diverse musical acts, interactive experiences, and scenic beauty made for an unforgettable weekend that left me feeling hot, but rejuvenated and inspired. I’m eagerly looking forward to returning to Outlandia for more musical enchantment in the years to come!
