April 19, 2024 – The Astro – La Vista, NE

Iconic rock band Sum 41 kicked off their final tour in La Vista, Nebraska on Friday night April 19, 2024.  The tour, dubbed, “Tour of the Setting Sum,” is a the last time the group will tour.  The night also featured performances by The Interrupters and Joey Valence & Brae.

The Astro was jammed packed, and fans in attendance were ready to party.

The night kicked off with Joey Valence & Brae, a duo hailing from Pennsylvania State University. The two met during their freshman year at Penn State, their friendship blossomed into a creative partnership, and they’ve been making waves ever since.

Joey, with his infectious energy, and Brae, with his smooth lyrical flow, complement each other perfectly. The concert kicked off with “Watch Yo Step”, setting the tone for the night. The crowd jumped, hands in the air, as the bass thumped through The Astro, but that was just the beginning. Here are some highlights from their electrifying set: “Double Jump”, a playful track that transported us back to our favorite video game soundtracks; “Punk Tactics”, their viral hit reminiscent of the Beastie Boys; and “Hooligang”, a high-energy banger that had the crowd going crazy. Their song “Tanaka”, blended razor-sharp verses with a killer beat.

Joey and Brae owned the stage, feeding off the crowd’s energy. Their chemistry was amazing.  This was my first time seeing them, and they didn’t disappoint.

Definitely keep an eye on these guys; they’re rewriting the rules of hip-hop, one beat at a time.  They have over 2.6 million monthly listeners on Spotify and their latest single, “John Cena,” is definitely worth checking out.

After a brief intermission, it was time for The Interrupters!

This was my second time seeing them live, and they were even better this time around.

Hailing from Los Angeles, California, The Interrupters burst onto the scene in 2011. The band members include Aimee Interrupter (the charismatic lead vocalist), Kevin Bivona (the guitarist who not only shreds but also connects with the audience), Jesse Bivona (the rhythmic drummer), and Justin Bivona (the bassist laying down groovy lines). They’ve released four studio albums, with their latest gem, “In the Wild,” dropping in 2022.

Their live set was nothing short of ska punk magic, seamlessly blending punk rock with infectious ska rhythms. Aimee’s infectious energy, Billy Kottage’s trombone skills, and surprise covers (like Billie Eilish’s “Bad Guy”) made the crowd go crazy. Their energy is off the charts!

The group has over 783 thousand monthly listeners on Spotify, and they aren’t slowing down anytime soon.  If you ever have the chance to see them live, make sure you do!

After a brief set change, it was time for the headliners!

Kicking off their final tour, Sum 41 pulled out all the stops!

The energy was insane from start to finish.

Sum 41 has been around for quite a while, forming back in the late 90s in Ajax, Ontario, Canada. They burst onto the scene with their debut album “All Killer No Filler” in 2001, which was a massive hit, especially with tracks like “Fat Lip” and “In Too Deep.” Let me tell you, those songs still get the crowd going wild, even after all these years!

What really impressed me about the concert was how great they sounded. These guys have been playing together for over two decades, and it really shows in their performance. Deryck Whibley’s vocals were on point, and the guitar solos from lead guitarist Dave Baksh were absolutely killer.

One thing I loved was the mix of old classics and newer stuff from their more recent albums. They’re not just resting on their laurels, they’re still putting out great music. Songs like “Still Waiting” and “Pieces” hit just as hard live as they do on the albums.

Deryck was all over the place, engaging with the crowd, and the rest of the band was feeding off that energy. There were moments when it felt like the whole venue was just one big mosh pit.

The whole crowd was screaming along and jumping up and down. It was pure chaos in the best way possible.

Over their storied music career, they’ve racked up two MuchMusic Video awards, two Juno Awards, a Woodie Award, and an Alternative Press Music Award.  They’ve released eight studio albums and have over 10.8 million monthly listeners on Spotify!

It was truly an honor and privilege to witness the first night of their farewell tour – a memory I won’t forget!
