On Sunday night September 17, 2023, Steelhouse in Omaha, Nebraska was the setting for Parliament Funkadelic ft. George Clinton’s Just For the Funk of It Final Tour, and it was an amazing night of funk music!
The evening kicked off with a set from George Porter Jr. and his band.
Porter, a true icon in the world of funk and jazz, proved once again why he is a force to be reckoned with in the live music scene. One of the most remarkable aspects of George Porter Jr.’s performance was his ability to seamlessly blend genres. His music effortlessly traversed the boundaries of funk, jazz, blues, and rock, creating a unique and infectious sound that had the entire audience moving to the rhythm. Porter was joined on stage with Chris Adkins on guitar, Terrance Houston on the drums, and Michael Lemmier on the keyboard.
Porter’s bass playing was, as always, nothing short of masterful. His grooves were deep, funky, and undeniably dance-inducing. It was impossible not to get lost in the infectious rhythms that seemed to emanate from his very soul. His vocals, a perfect complement to his bass wizardry, were soulful and heartfelt, delivering lyrics that resonated with the audience. It was a fantastic way to open the show!
After a brief intermission, it was time for Parliament Funkadelic and Geoge Clinton!
From the moment they took the stage, the crowd was engulfed in a swirling vortex of funk. Clinton, the 82-year-old maestro of funk, looked as vibrant and charismatic as ever, wearing a white jersey, tennis shoes, and a red sequined cape and hat.
He kicked off the show with “Funkentelechy,” and it was an instant party. The iconic synth bassline sent shockwaves through the venue, and the Funk Mob was in full effect.
What struck me most was the incredible ensemble of musicians onstage. The Parliament-Funkadelic collective featured some of the finest talents in funk, seamlessly blending grooves, horns, and cosmic rhythms. The sheer talent on that stage was mind-boggling.
The setlist was a funk lover’s dream, a journey through the P-Funk catalog that had the audience on their feet from start to finish. Classics like “One Nation Under a Groove,” “Give Up the Funk (Tear the Roof off the Sucker),” and “The Roof is on Fire” sent the crowd into a frenzy. Each song was an explosion of energy, and George Clinton’s iconic voice, still as powerful as ever, had the entire venue singing along.
As the concert drew to a close with “Atomic Dog,” a moment of soulful introspection in the midst of all the funkadelic chaos, I couldn’t help but feel that I had witnessed something historic. George Clinton & Parliament-Funkadelic had not just delivered a concert; they had delivered a transcendent funk experience that would be etched in my memory for years.
This concert was a testament to the timelessness of funk music and the enduring genius of George Clinton. It was a celebration of life, love, and the undeniable power of the groove!
