L7 with Le Butcherettes

June 6, 2019:  The Slowdown – Omaha, Nebraska

Electricity and positive vibes were in the air on Thursday night June 6th at the Slowdown.  While the venue wasn’t completely sold out, hundreds of fans gathered to witness L7 and Le Butcherettes tear down the house, and they weren’t disappointed.

Lead singer Teresa Suarez Cosio, better known by her stage name Teri Gender Bender, and her band Le Butcherettes opened the show with a short, but powerful set.  Gender Bender’s artistry and theatrics delighted the crowd, who right from the start, were feeling the music.

Le Butcherettes, a mexican punk band formed in 2007, has a predominantly punk rock or garage rock sound, and was seemingly a crowd favorite in Omaha.  Their set list included a few of their older hits, “Burn the Scab”, and “La Uva”, but featured mostly newer songs off their latest album, bi/Mental, which was released in February.

Le Butcherettes were the perfect choice to open up for L7.  They kept the energy high, and the crowd engaged.

After a brief intermission, L7 took the stage and the crowd literally went wild.  Founding member and lead singer, Donita Sparks greeted the Omaha crowd and the band kicked off their set with “Deathwish”, from their 1991 album Smell the Magic.

L7 had great energy, and concert goers wasted no time dancing and moshing to the music.  The band reformed in 2015 after a nearly fifteen year hiatus, and kicked off their US tour in April of 2018.  According to a fan in the crowd, the band “still kicked ass after all these years”.  All four women in the band interacted with the crowd and cracked a few jokes during their 18 song set.  They performed “Shitlist” to close the show, but eventually took the stage again for a three song encore which included “American Society”, “Pretend We’re Dead”, and “Fast and Frightening”, all from their early 90’s albums.

L7’s mixture of punk, metal, and garage music was definitely a hit with the Slowdown crowd, and proved why the band has such a faithful following.
