On Thursday night November 30, 2023 Cirque du Soleil Corteo had its opening night of a four day run at the CHI Health Center in Omaha, Nebraska, and it was spectacular!
The day before however, I had the incredible opportunity to embark on a backstage tour of Cirque du Soleil Corteo, and it was nothing short of awe-inspiring.
The backstage area is a labyrinth of creativity, filled with dedicated artists, technicians, and performers who work tirelessly to ensure the seamless execution of the show. My guide, Alexandra, the Senior Publicist and a knowledgeable and enthusiastic member of the Cirque team, took me on a journey through the various departments that make this production possible.
One of the highlights of the tour was witnessing the intricate costume and makeup department, where skilled artisans meticulously craft and maintain the elaborate costumes that play a crucial role in the visual storytelling of Corteo. The attention to detail was extraordinary, and learning about the symbolism woven into each costume added a deeper layer of appreciation for the show. The tour even brings their own washers and dryers with them!
As we moved deeper into the backstage area, Alexandra showed me the rehearsal spaces where the performers hone their craft. Later, I was able to watch as the performers practiced on the actual stage, which was unreal! Watching the artists practice their breathtaking aerial maneuvers and gravity-defying acrobatics up close was a privilege for sure!
The tour also offered a glimpse into the technical marvels that make Corteo a sensory feast. The lighting and sound control areas were a testament to the precision required to synchronize every element of the performance. Learning about the cutting-edge technology behind the scenes added another layer to the already immersive experience of watching Corteo on stage.
The backstage tour was a rare opportunity to witness the dedication, passion, and talent that fuel this world-renowned production, and got me so excited for the show the following night.
The next night, I attended the show’s opening night in Omaha, and I must say it was nothing short of spectacular. From the moment the curtains rose to the final bow, the audience was captivated by a mesmerizing blend of breathtaking performances, stunning visuals, and a whimsical narrative that transported us into a world of imagination and wonder.
The show’s concept, centered around a festive parade imagined by a clown, was executed flawlessly. The stage design was a marvel in itself, transforming seamlessly from one enchanting scene to another. The lighting and special effects added a magical touch, creating an immersive experience that kept the audience on the edge of their seats.
One of the standout features of Corteo was, undoubtedly, the incredible athleticism and artistry of the performers. From acrobats defying gravity to graceful aerialists suspended high above the stage, each act showcased the unparalleled talent and dedication of the Cirque du Soleil cast.
The precision and coordination displayed during group performances were particularly impressive, leaving the audience in awe of the sheer skill and teamwork involved.
The musical score was a perfect complement to the visual feast unfolding on stage. The live orchestra’s emotive and dynamic performance enhanced the overall experience, creating an atmosphere that ranged from whimsical and lighthearted to hauntingly beautiful.
