May 13, 2024 – Pinewood Bowl – Lincoln, NE
On Monday night May 13, 2024, fans gathered at the Pinewood Bowl in Lincoln, Nebraska to experience an amazing night of music with the alternative rock band CAKE.
Known for their eclectic mix of alternative rock, funk, and country influences, CAKE has been a staple of the music scene since the early ’90s, and this concert highlighted why they’ve maintained such a devoted fanbase over the years.
The concert kicked off with, “Sad Songs and Waltzes,” a Willie Nelson cover.
The band’s unique sound, characterized by frontman John McCrea’s deadpan vocals and Vince DiFiore’s distinctive trumpet melodies, had the crowd’s attention.
It was evident that these guys are seasoned performers, effortlessly engaging the audience with their quirky yet relatable lyrics and infectious rhythms. The band’s lineup, featuring long-time members like Greg Brown on guitar and Gabe Nelson on bass, showed off their tight musicianship, proving that even after decades in the industry, they’ve still got it.
Throughout the night, McCrea’s interaction with the audience was a standout. His banter was both sarcastic and endearing, creating a laid-back, intimate atmosphere despite the large crowd.
One of my favorite moments of the night happened during the encore when they performed “Short Skirt/Long Jacket.” McCrea’s dry wit shone through as he encouraged everyone to sing along, making it feel like a giant singalong rather than just another concert.
CAKE has a reputation for eccentric live performances, and this concert was no exception. Fans found catharsis in their music, and the band’s interaction with the audience made it a personal and enjoyable experience. They even threw a t-shirt into the crowd and gave away a cherry tree!
CAKE’s concert was a mix of nostalgia and fresh energy. Their unique blend of genres, clever lyrics, and engaging stage presence made for an unforgettable night. Whether you’re a long-time fan or new to their music, seeing CAKE live is a must!
