On Wednesday night, September 25, 2024, music history was made as Judas Priest brought their epic 2024 Invisible Shield Tour to Omaha’s Baxter Arena.

The night kicked off with Sabaton, a Swedish heavy metal band formed in 1999, known for their powerful lyrics that focus on historical events, particularly military history and battles. Their unique blend of power metal and historical storytelling has earned them a dedicated fanbase worldwide. Sabaton’s lineup includes Joakim Brodén (vocals and keyboards), Pär Sundström (bass), Chris Rörland (guitar), Tommy Johansson (guitar), and Hannes Van Dahl (drums).

Sabaton has released several critically acclaimed albums, such as The Art of War (2008) and Heroes (2014). Sabaton’s energetic live shows and strong connection to their fans have solidified their place in the modern metal scene.

They didn’t hold anything back with their set and the stage setup was a showstopper—an actual army tank with the drum set perched on top, and microphone stands designed to look like machine guns. For those that are unfamiliar, Judas Priest is an iconic British heavy metal band, formed in 1969, and often credited as one of the pioneers of the genre. With their signature twin-guitar attack, leather-and-studs look, and powerhouse vocals, they’ve influenced countless bands and solidified their place in metal history. Known for classic albums like British Steel (1980), Screaming for Vengeance (1982), and Painkiller (1990), Judas Priest has built a legacy that spans over five decades.

The current lineup includes Rob Halford (vocals), Ian Hill (bass), Scott Travis (drums), Richie Faulkner (guitar), and Andy Sneap (guitar). Over the years, they’ve earned numerous accolades, including a 2010 Grammy Award for “Best Metal Performance” for their song “Dissident Aggressor.” They were also inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022, cementing their legendary status.

From the moment the curtain dropped, we knew we were in for a treat!  Rob Halford’s vocals were nothing short of legendary—he hit those signature high notes with ease, proving that age hasn’t slowed him down one bit. The band was as tight as ever, with Richie Faulkner and Andy Sneap absolutely tearing through guitar solos, making classics like Breaking the Law and Painkiller feel as fresh as when they first dropped.

Scott Travis was a beast behind the drums, keeping the thunderous pace, while Ian Hill’s steady basslines kept the groove locked in. The production was awesome with laser lights and the kind of theatrical flair Judas Priest is known for.  Every song was a headbanger’s dream, and the band fed off the audience’s energy, making it feel like a true metal celebration. Even after all these years, Judas Priest proves they’re still kings of heavy metal, and this show was an absolute masterclass in how it’s done.
